Product Description

This 24k gold-overlay collectible is based on one of the most iconic objects to have survived from the ancient world. The original article is kept at the British museum in London and its replica is permanently displayed at the United Nations building in New York.

The Cyrus Cylinder is a barrel-shaped object (approx. 9″ x 4″) made from baked clay, describing Cyrus the Great, the King of Persia, who ruled in 6th Century B.C.. During this era, curved cylinders were utilized for printing purposes. They were rolled on clay tablets that were left to dry for permanent imprinting.

Cyrus-Cylinder-by-Ali-Moayedian-HRInscribed in Akkadian cuneiform script, the Cyrus Cylinder was discovered in 1879 in the ruins of Babylon, in modern-day Iraq. It tells the story of Cyrus’s conquest of the city-state and its incorporation into the Persian Empire, while placing the young king in the lineage of emperors. The inscriptions also describe the benevolent leader’s desire for displaced tribes to return to their homelands, his support for religious freedom and efforts to restore shrines. Some refer to the Cyrus Cylinder as the first declaration of human rights.

Today, this ancient Persian edict is once again inspiring Iran’s youthful population to strive for democracy and tolerance while reminding the international community of Persia’s glorious past.
