Lovebirds of Susa
Epic romances have often been symbolized by bird pairs in Persian literature, with the ensuing imagery appearing on the walls of majestic palaces and places of worship. The ancient city of Susa or Shoush, located in southwest Iran, is one of the country’s most famous historical sites and renowned for its dreamy watermills that stand and function to this day. Shoush once served as the capital of the Elamite Empire and the winter capital of the Achaemenid Empire. In November of 2014, UNESCO experts arrived in the city to register it on the World Heritage List.
