Winged Ibex Pendant

Product Number: PAG-RET-3571-PN

Product Description

Beyond Persepolis and Susa, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, variations of the Winged Ibex have been unearthed from Armenia to Kazakhstan in Central Asia, highlighting the outer reaches of a once opulent, powerful civilization.

Today, this ancient icon is highly valued by Iranian craftsmen and patrons of Persian arts and culture alike. A model of the Winged Ibex resides in a private collection in Paris and another in Tehran Museum.
An ancient artifact of Persian origin, the Winged Ibex symbolizes life and growth. Created during the Achaemenid Period, from the fourth to the fifth century B.C., the fantasized hybrid creature shows a unique animal caricature. Its elegant wings manifest Persia’s love of beauty and the animal kingdom.

In its original rendition, the Ibex’s feet are positioned on the head of a wise man, while its outspread wings and ringed horns underline the animal’s tremendous power and presence. As it stands on its hind legs, its forelegs are drawn in as if it may be leaping.
